Looking after your wellbeing over the holidays

Looking After Wellbeing over the holidays 2x1 ENG

Christmas is a time of joy and festivities, but for some, it can also be a time of stress, loneliness and grief. We understand that this can be a challenging period for many, so we’re sharing some tips and advice to help you take care of your wellbeing in the weeks ahead.

Make time for yourself

Christmas is often seen as a time for family and friends, but for some this isn’t the case, and the frequent reminders can often lead to increased feelings of loneliness. Planning your days ahead of time, creating a routine and keeping busy can help:

  • Plan to do things you enjoy or try a new hobby. Check if there are any events in your local area or join online groups with shared interests.
  • Consider volunteering. Many charities are seeking volunteers, especially over the festive period.
  • Try and open up to people you know. If you feel comfortable, be honest with them about how you're feeling.

Managing money worries

It can be tough to cope with the financial pressures of Christmas. The rises in the cost of living will have made things even harder for many but there are things you can do to help.

  • Create a budget to reduce unnecessary spending. Budgeting can help you feel more in control of what you can spend.
  • Agree to a spending limit for gifts. Explore free and low-cost options, such as homemade gifts and activities like quizzes or scavenger hunts.
  • Be honest with people. Most people will understand and may even feel the same as you.

Coping with feelings of loss

Christmas can be very difficult if we can't spend it with people we would like to. It’s important to look after yourself and find the best ways to cope throughout the season.

  • Loss is different for everyone. Celebrate Christmas the way that makes you feel comfortable but don’t force yourself to be festive if you are not ready to be.
  • Be open with those around you. If you want to celebrate in a particular way let people know so they can support you.
  • Be kind to yourself, especially if this is your first Christmas after a loss.

Staying at university over the holidays

If you're staying on campus, it's a good idea to plan ahead and explore what's on offer for you.

  • Staying at university over the holidays gives you the chance to meet other students who are sticking around as well.
  • Check in with your friends to see what they’re up to, ask around on social media, and stay connected with the groups you're already part of.
  • Student Minds has put together some tips you might find helpful for navigating the coming weeks.
